Rayyan: free, screening-focused, and widely accessible

Rayyan is free for individual use, which makes it an accessible entry point for students and researchers without institutional software budgets, and it focuses specifically and effectively on the screening stage, using a straightforward interface with a notable machine-learning-assisted feature that helps prioritize likely-relevant records earlier in the screening queue. It does not natively support the full extraction and risk-of-bias workflow the way Covidence does, meaning many teams use Rayyan specifically for screening and then move to a separate tool or structured spreadsheet for the remaining stages.

DistillerSR: built for larger, more complex reviews

DistillerSR is generally positioned toward larger-scale, more complex reviews, including systematic reviews conducted for health technology assessment and regulatory purposes, with more extensive customization options for building complex extraction forms and workflow rules. This flexibility comes with a steeper learning curve than Covidence or Rayyan, and it's often the choice for organizations running many concurrent, larger reviews rather than a single academic team running one review at a time.

Cost considerations

Rayyan's free tier is the most immediately accessible option for individual researchers or small student projects without institutional funding. Covidence requires either an institutional license, often already available through university library subscriptions worth checking before assuming you need to pay individually, or an individual paid subscription. DistillerSR is typically licensed at an organizational level and is generally the least accessible option for an individual researcher or small academic team working without institutional backing.

Screening features worth comparing directly

If dual independent screening with automatic conflict flagging matters most to your workflow, all three platforms support this core feature, though the specific interface for resolving conflicts differs meaningfully in ease of use between them. If machine-learning-assisted screening prioritization is important, particularly for reviews with a very large number of records to screen, Rayyan's implementation of this feature is generally considered strong and is available even in its free tier.

Extraction and appraisal features

Software does not replace methodology

The right software choice, made deliberately rather than by default, becomes an largely invisible enabler of good methodology rather than an obstacle your team has to work around for the length of an entire review project. A thoughtful choice made once, early, continues paying dividends quietly throughout every subsequent stage of the work that follows. Few upfront decisions in a systematic review offer this much lasting, compounding benefit.
